Un bronze de Jean Béliveau à Longueuil/ A bronze statue of Jean Béliveau in Longueuil
Une imposante statue de bronze immortalisant Jean Béliveau a été officiellement dévoilée hier après-midi à Longueuil. Le monument d’une hauteur de huit pieds a été créé par le sculpteur Jules Lasalle, qui a aussi sculpté le monument de Robert Bourassa inauguré l’an dernier devant l’Assemblée Nationale.
La statue du Grand Jean est située devant le colisée qui porte son nom. Une centaine de personnes ont participés à la cérémonie d’hier. Le maire de Longueuil Claude Gladu a souligné que M.Béliveau représente toujours un exemple à suivre pour la jeunesse, de part ses qualités de hockeyeur, sa gentillesse et sa classe.
La ville de Longueuil cherchait depuis longtemps à honorer son illustre résident mais le projet a vraiment décollé lorsque Mme Doris Guénette s’est impliquée dans le dossier. Cette amie de la famille Béliveau a permis de récolter les dollars nécessaires à ce projet.
J’ai bien hâte de voir cette statue! Je dis toujours que c’est une bonne idée d’honorer nos grands personnages lorsqu’ils sont encore en vie. Je n’était pas encore née lorsque Jean Béliveau a pris sa retraite (mon époque étant plutôt celle de Guy Lafleur) mais j’ai toujours trouver qu’il avait beaucoup de classe./
A gigantic bronze statue of former Montreal Canadiens forward Jean Béliveau has been officially unveiled yesterday afternoon in Longueuil (a subrub of Montreal on its southern shore). It was created by sculptor Jules Lasalle, who also built the Robert Bourassa monument in front of the Quebec National Assembly.
The Jean Béliveau statue is located in front of the arena named after him. Over one hundred people attented yesterday’s ceremony. The mayor of Longueuil, Claude Gladu, told the crowd that Jean Béliveau is still a model for today’s young people with his sportsmanship and athletic prowess.
The city of Longueuil had been looking to honour him for a long time, but it took the perseverance of Ms Doris Guénette to get the project rolling. A friend of the Béliveau family Ms Guénette was able to raise the moneys necessary for the monument.
I really want to see this statue! I always say that it is a good idea to honour our heroes while they are still alive. I am too young to have seen the legendary #4 play (my earliest era was that of Guy Lafleur) but I’ve always felt that the man was sophisticated and in a class of his own.

De la F1 au Nascar/ From F1 to Nascar
Jacques Villeneuve reprends le volant: dès demain il amorcera des essais privés pour l’écurie de Bill Davis Racing. Mais ce ne sera pas dans une voiture Nascar que Villeneuve fera ses débuts mais bien dans une camionnette! Il fera ses essais pour la série NASCAR Craftsman.
Jacques Villeneuve dit qu’il s’emmène dans la série Nascar uniquement pour le plaisir. Un test réussi en amènera d’autres dans les prochains mois. Si tout va bien une première course pour Villeneuve en camionnette NASCAR Craftsman aura lieu dans un mois.
Il n’est pas évident pour un pilote de F1 de passer à une série complètement différente comme Nascar. Juan Pablo Montoya après un bon début a eu quelques difficultés récemment. Espérons que Villeneuve soit capable de dénicher un volant d’une voiture de la série Nextel (la plus prestigieuse des séries Nascar) l’an prochain./
Jacques Villeneuve will drive again. Tomorrow he will do private tests with the Bill Davis Racing team. But it won’t be in a racecar that Villeneuve will ride in: it will be in a pick-up truck! He will do tests for a NASCAR Craftsman series truck.
Jacques says that he only joins Nascar for the fun of driving. If all goes well a first race in a pick-up truck for the NASCAR Craftman series will be likely to happen in a month.
It’s hard for a driver to go from F1 to Nascar…Juan Pablo Montoya had some successes early on but he now has some problems. Let’s hope that Villeneuve will find a car in the Nextel series next year.

Sam Pollock 1925-2007
Les fans du Canadiens de Montréal sont en deuil. Sam Pollock, directeur général du Canadien dans les années 60 et 70, est décédé hier. Véritable bâtisseur d’une dynastie gagnante de tant de Coupes Stanley, il était un visionnaire ayant une stratégie à long terme et a réalisé de nombreux coups fumants.
Il a repêché des joueurs tels Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Steve Shutt et Bob Gainey. Ce fut lui qui a nommé Henri Richard comme capitaine du Canadien.
Homme travaillant mais discret, il était atteint d’un cancer. Toutes mes sympathies vont à sa famille, ses amis et ses anciens collègues.//
Fans of the Montreal Canadiens are in mourning: Sam Pollock, former GM who built a winning dynasty that won many Stanley Cups, died yesterday. He was a visionnary and had a strategy for the long term.
He picked up many great players such as Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Steve Shutt and Bob Gainey; it was him that named Henri Richard (the Pocket Rocket) as team captain.
My condolences go to his family, friends and former colleagues.

-L’Ontarien Frank Dancevic passe en quarts de finale! C’est la première fois depuis 1989 (Grant Connell) qu’un Canadien atteint les quarts de finale aux Masters du Canada (Connell avait été battu par Ivan Lendl, qui a ensuite remporté le tournoi). Hier sur le court #1 Dancevic a battu l’Espagnol Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-4 et 6-3. Lors de la conférence d’après-match Dancevic a déclanché l’hilarité générale lorsqu’il a déclaré qu’il ne savait pas encore sur quel court il jouait: son adversaire sera nul autre que Rafael Nadal, donc on peut dire qu’il jouera sur le court central./

-Hier après-midi Roger Federer a célébré en grand son 26 ième anniversaire en sortant le Croate Ivo Karlovic. Devant un publique conquit d’avance qui lui a chanté “Bonne Fête!” à quelques occasions, le numéro un mondial ne s’est pas laissé démonter et a éliminé son adversaire.
-Le sympathique suisse affrontera cet après-midi à 13hres (heure de l’est) un illustre inconnu, l’Italien Fabio Fogini./
