Weekend métallique/ Metallic weekend
Grosse fin de semaine en perspective pour les amateurs de heavy-metal du Québec! En effet, c’est ce weekend qu’aura lieu au Club Soda (Montréal) les spectacles commémorant les 25 ans du heavy-métal québécois.
Ce soir le death-métal des années 90 est à l’honneur avec les prestations de Démence, Agony, Necrotic Mutation et Obliveon. Un concours d’air-guitar (!!) aura également lieu.
Demain c’est la nostalgie des années 80 avec The Affected (hardcore), Damnation (grindcore/death) et les groupes de thrash metal Soothsayer et DBC, ainsi que l’intronisation de Piggy (le défunt guitariste de Voivod) dans le panthéon du métal québécois .
Quant à dimanche, l’heure est à l’avenir avec des groupes de 2007: Empathy Denied (groupe de Steven Henry, sympathique personnage de la scène underground québécoise et l’une des personnes les plus généreuse que je connaisse), Negativa (le nouveau groupe de Luc Lemay, l’ex-leader de Gorguts) ainsi que deux nouvelles formations dont j’ai oublié les noms (désolé!).
On m’a demandé quel fut l’élément déclencheur du métal québécois il y a 25 ans. Je n’ai pas trouvé de réponse précise, mais selon moi c’est la fondation du groupe Voivod à Jonquière en 1982 qui peut faire office de début officiel de la scène heavy-métal au Québec. Avant ça il devait bien y avoir quelques groupes de covers de hard-rock, mais pas de groupes de heavy-metal composant de la musique originale. On peut dire que Voivod a bel et bien tout commencé ! D’après moi Piggy mérite amplement l’hommage qui lui sera fait.
Donc chapeau à Maurice Richard qui organise cet événement. Bravo aussi à tous les autres qui ont dessiné le poster (un des plus beaux que j’ai vu depuis une mèche) et ceux qui feront office de roadies, ces travailleurs de l’ombre essentiels au bon fonctionnement d’un concert, sans oublier les groupes qui se sont reformés pour cette occasion.
J’ai tellement hâte de voir la prestation de DBC, vous n’avez pas idée! La dernière fois que je les ai vus je crois que c’était en avril 1991, au défunt Backstreet…Wow, ça ne me rajeunit pas!

This is quite a big weekend for heavy metal lovers in Quebec. It is this weekend that the concert for the 25th anniversary of Quebec heavy metal will happen, at Montreal’s Club Soda.
Tonight is 90’s death metal with Demence, Agony, Necrotic Mutation and Obliveon. There will also be an air-guitar contest (!!).
Tomorrow it will be the 1980’s all over again with sets by The Affected (hardcore), Damnation (grindcore) and thrash metal bands Soothsayer and DBC. Deceased Voivod guitarist Piggy will be the first inductee into the Quebec Heavy Metal pantheon.
On sunday it’s 2007 talent that is celebrated. Empathy Denied (the new band of Steven Henry, one of the most generous person I’ve ever met), Negativa (the new band of ex-Gorguts mainman Luc Lemay) and two other bands which I don’t remember the names of (sorry!) will perform.
I was asked what event started the Quebec heavy metal scene 25 years ago. I have no set answer, but I believe that it was in 1982 that Voivod were formed in Jonquière. Before them there probably were a couple of hard-rock cover bands playing in bars here and there, but Voivod was the first heavy metal band in Quebec to create their own songs. So we can say that it was Voivod which started it all! I believe that Piggy deserves the honour which will be bestowed upon him. It’s just too bad that it didn’t happen while he was alive…
So congratulations go to Maurice Richard, the main organizer of this weekend. I also would like to say to whoever designed the poster that it is one of the best looking ones I’ve seen in quite some time. Another thank you goes to the roadies, these unseen workers without whom barely any show would go on. I’m not forgetting the eight bands that reformed solely to play for this event!
I can’t wait to see DBC, you have no idea! I think the last time that I’ve seen them was in April 1991 at the now closed Backstreet. Wow, that ages me!

Vais-je y aller? Probablement pas! Manque de fonds $$! Et la bière y est dégueulasse: de la Molson Ex diluée qui coûte 10$, non merci! Mais ceux qui vont y aller vont sûrement avoir droit à un bon show hard-rock./
It’s confirmed! Van Halen, with David Lee Roth, will play the Montreal Bell Centre next November 10.
Will I go? Most likely not…Not enough $$! And the beer is disgusting: watered-down Molson Ex at $10 a glass, no thanks!But those that will go will most likely witness a good hard-rock show.
Le retour de Van Halen/ Van Halen’s comeback
-J’ai des sentiments partagés à propos de la méga-tournée de Van Halen avec leur premier chanteur, David Lee Roth. D’un côté la nostalgique en moi est heureuse qu’enfin Dave et Eddie ont pu mettre de côté leurs égos démesurés et donner aux fans ce qu’ils réclament depuis longtemps (le $$$ qu’ils obtiendront de ces concerts aidant), de l’autre je suis extrêmement déçue du traitement réservé à l’ancien bassiste Michael Anthony.
D’après ce que j’ai cru comprendre, il y a quelques années les frères Van Halen (Eddie et Alex) voulaient prendre une pause. C’était après le désastre Van Halen III et le chanteur Gary Cherone…Michael Anthony a donc contacté son ex-accolyte Sammy Hagar pour lui offrir ses services. Pour lui Van Halen n’était pas terminé, ils prennaient seulement une longue pause pour qu’Eddie puisse enfin régler ses problèmes personnels (divorce d’avec Valerie Bertinelli, alcoholisme, cancer). Depuis Michael et Sammy font des tournées ensemble sous le nom de “The Other Half”.
Je ne doute pas une seconde du talent de Wolfgang Van Halen, le fils d’Eddie; s’il a le même talent que son père avait à son âge -16 ans- il doit déjà être tout un virtuose!Seulement, il va manquer quelqu’un sur les planches…Michael Anthony, qui est un bon showman. Ses harmonies vocales donnent du relief aux chansons de Van Halen.
Un autre truc qui m’horripile: j’ai lu que la photo de Michael Anthony a été retirée du site web de Van Halen et remplacée par celle de Wolf! C’est correct de mettre une photo du p’tit jeune pour illustrer le line-up de la tournée 2007, mais de retirer toutes les photos de Michael comme s’il n’avait jamais existé alors qu’il a joué avec le groupe pendant plus de 25 ans, quel manque de classe! Ça me rappelle Staline qui effaçait les photos de collaborateurs qu’il venait de faire “disparaître”…Des fans de Van Halen en furie ont forcés le webmestre du site à faire marche arrière et le lendemain les photos du bassiste déchu étaient de nouveau en ligne.
En plus je viens tout juste de lire que les “back-vocals” de Michael Anthony vont être entendues lors de la tournée! En effet le groupe refuse la présence en chair et en os de leur bassiste originel mais celui-ci sera présent virtuellement, grâce à la magie de la technologie. Les passages qu’il chantait sur les disques seront échantillonés…Navrant.
J’ai bien hâte de lire les premiers commentaires de spectateurs après les deux ou trois premiers spectacles! Les concerts sont presques tous sold-out, ils vont faire un grand coup d’argent mais j’espère pour les fans qu’Eddie sera sobre. Par contre je suis convaincue que Dave sera l’extraordinaire showman qu’il a toujours été./
- I have mixed feelings regarding the upcoming Van Halen “reunion” tour . My nostalgic side is happy that Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth patched things up and let their massive egos on the side (lots of $$$ helped!) to give what the fans wanted for so many years, that is to see David Lee Roth fronting Van Halen again. On the other hand I don’t like the way they behave towards Michael Anthony, the band’s original bassist.
From what I understand a few years ago after the Van Halen III fiasco and the disastrous Gary Cherone-era the brothers Van Halen (Eddie and Alex) wanted to take an extended break. Eddie needed time to take care of himself as he was divorcing Valerie Bertinelli, had a drinking problem and cancer. Michael Anthony wanted to continue playing and touring, so he contacted Sammy Hagar. Since then Michael and Sammy still play together and tour the US often under the name “The Other Half”.
I’m sure that Wolfang Van Halen is very talented. If he plays like his father did at his age – 16- he must already be a virtuoso. But there’ll be someone missing on the side of the stage: Michael Anthony. He’s a great showman and his backing vocals are a big part of the classic VH sound.
Another thing that really bugs me: I read that Michael’s pictures were removed from Van Halen’s official website and replaced by Wolf’s pics! It’s OK to put the kid’s pictures in the 2007 edition of Van Halen, but to remove the original bassist’s pics from the band history section? Unbelievable. This reminds me of when Stalin doctored official pictures and removed collaborators whom he had “disappeared”. Angry VH fans contacted the webmaster and Michael’s pics were back online the next day.
I’ve just read that Michael Anthony’s backing vocals will be heard on this tour. So it is what it is: seen but not heard! His backing vocals will be sampled from the classic albums and played throughout the set. Man that is so weird! Van Halen is not a techno band!
I can’t wait to read the fan comments after the first two or three dates. Most of the concerts are sold-out, they’ll make a killing with this tour, but I do hope for the fans’s sake that Eddie will be sober. I do have a hunch that David Lee Roth will be the fantastic showman that he is.

Mauvais souvenirs…/ Bad memories…
Je viens de voir la nouvelle gracieuseté de l’AP: le groupe Great White a joué hier soir à l’Alrosa Villa, le club de l’Ohio ou Dimebag Darrell a été assassiné sur scène par un tireur fou en décembre 2004.
Il me semble que ça fait morbide de savoir que Great White vient d’y jouer …Vous rappellez-vous de l’incendie dans un club du Rhode Island qui a tué plus de 100 fans en février 2003? C’était Great White qui était sur scène lors de la mauvaise pyrotechnie; d’ailleurs leur guitariste Ty Longley est mort dans ce sinistre.
D’unifier deux des pires tragédies du hard rock de la sorte montre un sérieux manque de jugement. Mais bon, le concert a eu lieu, des gens s’y sont bien amusés, la vie continue… Peut-être est-ce moi qui est trop sensible?/
I just saw this tidbit from the AP: Great White played yesterday at the club in Ohio where Dimebag Darrel was murdered onstage in 2004.
Great White was the band with the deadly pyrotechnicals responsible for the 100 deaths in the 2003 Rhode Island nighclub fire. One of their guitar players, Ty Longley, died in the blaze.
To me it’s sad that a nighclub owner would want to unify the two worst hard-rock tragedies of this decade. It shows a serious lack of judgement…But hey, the show was yesterday night, people had a good time, life goes on. I guess we can’t blame the club owner for offering a rock’n'roll show to fans in the area. Maybe it’s just me being oversensitive about it all.

Pas de Van Halen au Québec/No Van Halen in Quebec
-Ça y est, c’est fait!! Dans une conférence de presse hier Eddie Van Halen et David Lee Roth ont annoncé la tournée de réunion du line-up des beaux jours de Van Halen.
Trois villes canadiennes sont au programme: Calgary, Edmonton et Vancouver. Déception donc pour les amateurs du Québec, qui devront aller à Boston ou New York pour voir le groupe./
-It’s done! Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth confirmed yesterday what every hard rock music fan knew since last week: that a reunion tour with the band’s classic line-up was imminent.
Sadly for their Quebec fans, no tour date either in Montreal or Quebec City is in the works. The only Canadian dates are in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. So if fans in Quebec want to see their heroes in action, they’ll have to go south to either NYC or Boston…
On ne rigole pas en Iran/No fun allowed in Iran
-D’après l’Australian Broadcasting Corporation, plus de 230 jeunes assistants à un concert rock underground ont été arrêtés par la police le weekend dernier. Le concert, donné près de Téhéran, a été perquisitionné par la police qui a arrêté tous les jeunes gens présents. D’après le Procureur de la ville de Karaj, 230 jeunes ont été arrêtés dans ce spectacle jugé satanique et décadent. En Iran il y a de nombreux partys undeground mais le Ministère de la Vertu (comme je déteste ce genre de ministère avec un nom Orwellien) craque sur tout ce qui est contraire à la loi Islamique (mixité, vêtements moulants pour les femmes et la consommation d’alcohol) de ces temps-ci.
Un récent dossier dans la revue The Economist consacré à l’Iran révélait que près de 60% de la population est âgée de moins de 25 ans; ces jeunes n’ont rien connu d’autres que le régime islamique actuel. Parmi les jeunes arrêtés lors du concert il y avait des Britanniques et des Suédois; cependant d’après la chaine australienne rapportant la nouvelle ceux-ci ont également la citoyenneté iranienne et étaient en vacances en Iran.

-According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, some 230 young people were arrested near Theran last weekend at an underground rock concert. The prosecutor of the town of Karaj told Iran’s state broadcaster that the concert was satanic and decadent.
There are many underground parties going on in Iran, but the Ministry of Vice and Virtue (boy do I detest these Orwellian-sounding names! sends shiver down my spine) recently went on a crackdown on everything considered immoral and contrary to the Islamic law (mixed genders, revealing clothing, alcohol comsumption).
A recent dossier in The Economist on Iran revealed that about 60% of Iranians are under 25 year olds; these young people never knew anything other than the current regime. Amongst the young people arrested were some dual nationals from the UK and Sweden, on vacation there.
What a sad place!

À moins qu’il soit dans une forme exceptionnelle, ce que je doute. Nous ne sommes plus en 1984./
-According to the website of Rolling Stone, an announcement regarding a reunion tour of Van Halen with David Lee Roth is imminent. Hum, it seems like this little game has been going on for the last ten years…Eddie seems to like the bottle a little too much these days, anyways I doubt that I’d go if this show stops in my neck of the woods. Unless he’s now in great physical and mental shape, which I doubt. We’re not in 1984 anymore.

-Il est extrêmement rare que j’achète cette revue, mais la une du Rolling Stone datant du 9 août 07 est consacrée au vingtième anniversaire du premier album de Guns N’ Roses, “Appetite For Destruction ”. Excellent article! En tout cas on en apprend des vertes et des pas mûres sur l’enregistrement de cet album (oui, je dis bien album). Une des choses que je retiens est que “Appetite… ” fut un des derniers albums tout analogue. J’ai pour ma part découvert cet album environ un an plus tard, lors de mon changement d’école secondaire. Je trippais fort sur Testament, Megadeth, Celtic Frost et autres groupes thrash metal et je détestais souverainement tous les groupes comme Poison et Bon Jovi, bref le glam rock à la sauce Sunset Strip qui empestait les ondes. Sauf que lorsque j’ai entendu le premier Guns N’Roses, j’ai compris qu’il y avait quelque chose de différent. Un danger, une urgence, quelque chose qui manquait chez les bands de Los Angeles (Poison et Warrant étaient aussi dangereux qu’un caniche nain), enfin un groupe de hard rock qui reprennait le flambeau des Led Zeppelin et de Thin Lizzy!!

Le scandale de l’Iran Gate, les débats houleux de l’accord du Lac Meech (le Canada et le Québec étaient gouvernés par Mulroney et Bourassa-les relations entre Ottawa et Québec furent sommes toutes harmonieuses en ce temps-là),la glasnost et perestroika de Gorby, la mort de Rudolf Hess à Spandau et la condamnation de Klaus Barbie à Lyon pour crimes contre l’humanité, ainsi que ce courageux correspondant d’ABC pour le Moyen-Orient qui a fuit ses geoliers du Hezzbollah qui le tenait en otage au Liban, bref ce fut un été mouvementé au niveau de l’actualité.
20 ans déjà!! Il m’arrive encore d’écouter cet album (cette fois sur CD, bien sûr) et je l’aime encore en entier. Il n’y a aucun temps mort, malgré que la pièce Sweet Child Of Mine a été tellement joué à toutes les sauces que je la skippe souvent. Bon anniversaire!/
It doesn’t happen often that I buy that magazine, but the august 9 cover of Rolling Stone is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the first Guns N’ Roses album “Appetite For Destruction”. Great article! One of the things that I like about this album (yes, I do say album) is that it is one of the last great piece of hard rock to be recorded with vinyl in mind. I remember in 1987 I was totally into thrash metal like Testament, Megadeth and Celtic Frost; the airwaves were polluted with junk like Poison and Bon Jovi (I do admit nowadays to like a few of their songs, so shoot me!) so an album like the GNR debut was bound to make heads spin. It was almost exactly a year later when I changed schools that I discovered “Appetite…” and I immediately took a liking to it. There was an emergency, a dangerousness that was conspicuously absent from the Sunset Strip bands of the era; it reminded me of the early albums by hard-rock icons like Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy.
Do you remember the summer of 1987? IranGate, the spirited debates of the Meech Lake accords (Mulroney and Bourassa governed Canada and Quebec respectively, which made for harmonious relations between the two govt. levels), Gorby and his glastnost/perestroika, the death in Spandau of its last prisoner Rudolph Hess and the condemnation for crimes against humanity in Lyon of Klaus Barbie, the courageous escape of an ABC-News middle-east correspondent from his Hizbollah-influenced jailers in Lebanon…All in all, it was an eventful summer.
20 years…I sometimes do listen to this album (on CD nowadays), and I can say that there isn’t one filler on it (although I do am tired of the vastly overplayed Sweet Child Of Mine, so I do skip it). Happy Anniversary!
