Weekend métallique/ Metallic weekend
Grosse fin de semaine en perspective pour les amateurs de heavy-metal du Québec! En effet, c’est ce weekend qu’aura lieu au Club Soda (Montréal) les spectacles commémorant les 25 ans du heavy-métal québécois.
Ce soir le death-métal des années 90 est à l’honneur avec les prestations de Démence, Agony, Necrotic Mutation et Obliveon. Un concours d’air-guitar (!!) aura également lieu.
Demain c’est la nostalgie des années 80 avec The Affected (hardcore), Damnation (grindcore/death) et les groupes de thrash metal Soothsayer et DBC, ainsi que l’intronisation de Piggy (le défunt guitariste de Voivod) dans le panthéon du métal québécois .
Quant à dimanche, l’heure est à l’avenir avec des groupes de 2007: Empathy Denied (groupe de Steven Henry, sympathique personnage de la scène underground québécoise et l’une des personnes les plus généreuse que je connaisse), Negativa (le nouveau groupe de Luc Lemay, l’ex-leader de Gorguts) ainsi que deux nouvelles formations dont j’ai oublié les noms (désolé!).
On m’a demandé quel fut l’élément déclencheur du métal québécois il y a 25 ans. Je n’ai pas trouvé de réponse précise, mais selon moi c’est la fondation du groupe Voivod à Jonquière en 1982 qui peut faire office de début officiel de la scène heavy-métal au Québec. Avant ça il devait bien y avoir quelques groupes de covers de hard-rock, mais pas de groupes de heavy-metal composant de la musique originale. On peut dire que Voivod a bel et bien tout commencé ! D’après moi Piggy mérite amplement l’hommage qui lui sera fait.
Donc chapeau à Maurice Richard qui organise cet événement. Bravo aussi à tous les autres qui ont dessiné le poster (un des plus beaux que j’ai vu depuis une mèche) et ceux qui feront office de roadies, ces travailleurs de l’ombre essentiels au bon fonctionnement d’un concert, sans oublier les groupes qui se sont reformés pour cette occasion.
J’ai tellement hâte de voir la prestation de DBC, vous n’avez pas idée! La dernière fois que je les ai vus je crois que c’était en avril 1991, au défunt Backstreet…Wow, ça ne me rajeunit pas!

This is quite a big weekend for heavy metal lovers in Quebec. It is this weekend that the concert for the 25th anniversary of Quebec heavy metal will happen, at Montreal’s Club Soda.
Tonight is 90’s death metal with Demence, Agony, Necrotic Mutation and Obliveon. There will also be an air-guitar contest (!!).
Tomorrow it will be the 1980’s all over again with sets by The Affected (hardcore), Damnation (grindcore) and thrash metal bands Soothsayer and DBC. Deceased Voivod guitarist Piggy will be the first inductee into the Quebec Heavy Metal pantheon.
On sunday it’s 2007 talent that is celebrated. Empathy Denied (the new band of Steven Henry, one of the most generous person I’ve ever met), Negativa (the new band of ex-Gorguts mainman Luc Lemay) and two other bands which I don’t remember the names of (sorry!) will perform.
I was asked what event started the Quebec heavy metal scene 25 years ago. I have no set answer, but I believe that it was in 1982 that Voivod were formed in Jonquière. Before them there probably were a couple of hard-rock cover bands playing in bars here and there, but Voivod was the first heavy metal band in Quebec to create their own songs. So we can say that it was Voivod which started it all! I believe that Piggy deserves the honour which will be bestowed upon him. It’s just too bad that it didn’t happen while he was alive…
So congratulations go to Maurice Richard, the main organizer of this weekend. I also would like to say to whoever designed the poster that it is one of the best looking ones I’ve seen in quite some time. Another thank you goes to the roadies, these unseen workers without whom barely any show would go on. I’m not forgetting the eight bands that reformed solely to play for this event!
I can’t wait to see DBC, you have no idea! I think the last time that I’ve seen them was in April 1991 at the now closed Backstreet. Wow, that ages me!

Il y a 10 ans la princesse Diana décédait des suites de blessures subies dans un accident de voiture à Paris.
Personne n’a réussi à la remplacer depuis, dans les coeurs des citoyens britanniques ou autres. Depuis, Charles s’est remarié avec Camilla.Tant mieux pour eux, le but de la vie étant d’atteindre le bonheur.
Une messe du souvenir a lieu aujourd’hui à Londres. Ses enfants seront présents, tout comme la famille royale ainsi que ses amis Sir Elton John et Cliff Richards. Camilla n’y sera pas, malgré son invitation./
Ten years ago today Princess Diana died in a Paris car accident.
Nobody was able to replace her in the hearts of the British people. Since then, Charles married Camilla. Good for them; the goal in life is to find happiness.
There’ll be a mass in her honour today in London. Her sons will be there, as will most of the Royal Family and her friends Sir Elton John and Cliff Richards. Camilla was invited but prefered not to attend.
Katrina: deuxième anniversaire/Katrina:second anniversary
Hier on soulignait le deuxième anniversaire de l’ouragan Katrina. On se souvient comment la Nouvelle-Orléans et une partie du Mississippi furent ravagés. Les chaines câblées nous montraient des images apocalyptiques de pauvres gens ramassés comme du bétail dans le Superdome, d’autres qui refusaient de quitter leur maison, etc…
La gestion en Louisiane de cette crise fut lamentable à tous les niveaux. Le maire, la gouverneure et le président n’ont fait preuve d’aucun leadership dans cette affaire, au grand dam des gens captifs d’une ville livrée à l’anarchie.
Deux ans plus tard, la ville de la Nouvelle-Orléans revit. Mais maintenant il y a un avant-Katrina et un après-Katrina. La ville a changé démographiquement.
Certains élus ont payé un prix politique. Si le maire Nagin a été réélu, la gouverneure de Louisiane Mme Blanco ne se représentera pas aux prochaines élections. Même si à l’époque le Président Bush conservait une relative cote de popularité, c’est à partir de sa mauvaise gestion de la crise due à Katrina que sa popularité a vraiment dégringolée. Depuis, il n’a jamais eu de cote de popularité supérieure à 40 %. Avec la guerre en Iraq et les divers scandales de membres républicains du Congrès, Katrina fut une des causes qui a permis aux Républicains de perdre le contrôle de la Chambre des Représentants ainsi que du Sénat lors des élections de mi-mandat de 2006./
Yesterday was the second anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated a part of Mississippi and Louisiana (most notably the city of New Orleans). The cable news channels were showing apocalyptic scenes of people stuck in the Superdome, others that didn’t want to leave their homes because they feared looting, etc.
The three levels of government were really mediocre in their handling of Katrina. The mayor of New Orleans, the governor of Louisiana and the President showed no leadership, and this made the disaster worst for the people left in a city close to anarchy.
Two years later, New Orleans is living again. However the city changed a lot demographically.
Some elected officials payed a political price. Mayor Nagin was reelected, but Governor Blanco will not run for a second term. When Katrina hit President Bush had decent approval ratings, but it was at this point that his approval ratings started to drop below 40%. With the Iraq war and scandals involving GOP members of Congress, Katrina was a factor in the loss of Republican-controlled House Of Representatives and Senate after the mid-term elections of 2006.

Will I go? Most likely not…Not enough $$! And the beer is disgusting: watered-down Molson Ex at $10 a glass, no thanks!But those that will go will most likely witness a good hard-rock show.
Mario Dumont: opportuniste ou homme de la situation?/ Mario Dumont: opportunist or man in charge?
Le chef de l’Opposition Officielle à Québec, Mario Dumont, est partout dans les médias depuis son retour de vacances. Que ce soit à propos du nombre d’immigrants que le Québec a la capacité d’accueillir, de l’élection partielle qui s’en vient dans Charlevoix ou que faire dans le cas des agresseurs sexuels, le jeune politicien domine l’agenda médiatique.
Est-ce que M. Dumont est l’homme de la situation ou un simple opportuniste ? D’après moi tous les politiciens se doivent d’être un peu opportuniste, sinon ils risquent de devenir complètement déconnectés de la réalité.
Il y a beaucoup de choses qui m’intéressent dans le programme de l’ADQ; ça ne veut pas dire par contre que je voterais pour eux advenant une élection demain matin. Je souhaite voir M.Dumont occuper la fonction de chef de l’opposition pour plusieurs mois, voir un an ou deux. On voit la stature d’un chef à la façon dont il réagit à l’adversité. Et des difficultés c’est sûr qu’il en rencontrera !
Si le Premier Ministre Jean Charest veut rattraper les votes perdus à l’ADQ, il se doit de sortir de son mutisme des derniers jours et de reprendre l’agenda en main. Le succès électoral de M.Dumont est dû au leadership qu’il projetait; M.Charest projette parfois l’image d’un homme qui n’a pas l’air d’aimer ce qu’il fait. Il se doit de se remettre en selle, Dieu sait que les dossiers chauds seront nombreux cette automne./
The leader of the Opposition in Quebec, Mario Dumont, is everywhere in the media since he came back from his vacation. Whether it’s regarding the number of immigrants that the province is able to welcome each year, the upcoming partial election in Charlevoix or what to do with sexual predators, the young politician dominates the agenda.
Is Mr.Dumont the man of the situation or is he a simple opportunist? As far as I’m concerned, all politicians are opportunists, and they must be so a little otherwise they could seem out of touch.
There are many things that I agree with in the ADQ’s political platform, but I’m not sure if I’d vote for them were an election called tomorrow. I want to observe how Mr.Dumont will behave as leader of the opposition this fall, when there will be many dossiers that will be debated at the National Assembly. We recognize a great leader in how he deals with adversity…
If Premier Charest wants to regain the votes that he lost last spring, he must take the lead once again. The electoral successes of Dumont were due to the leadership that he projected. Sometimes it seems like Mr Charest doesn’t like his job. He must regain control of the agenda, Lord knows that there will be a lot of major issues to be dealt with this fall!

Le 29 août 1907 s’écroulait le pont de Québec. En construction depuis quatre ans, le pont s’effondra et entraina 75 travailleurs dans la mort. Parmi ceux-ci se trouvait 33 employés d’origine Mohawk.
Un autre accident eu lieu neuf ans plus tard, celui-ci causant la mort de 11 hommes. Le plus long pont cantilever du monde fut ouvert au traffic ferroviaire le 3 décembre 1919.
Le pont de Québec est considéré comme une merveille d’ingénérie. Il fut classé monument historique par le gouvernement canadien en 1996./
On August 29 1907 the Quebec bridge collapsed. It was four years into its construction. 75 workers died in the collapse. 33 of these were of Mohawk origins.
Nine years later another accident happened, with eleven construction workers dead. The longest cantilever bridge in the world finally opened to railway traffic on December 3, 1919.
The Quebec bridge is considered to be an engineering marvel. The Canadian government named it an historic monument in 1996.

C’est incroyable comment les communications sont rapides de nos jours. Mon père a emmené son BlackBerry avec lui lors de ses vacances au Sénégal; il n’avait aucune idée si son bidule fonctionnerait là-bas. Bref, il est présentement à Siné-Saloum (dans le fond de la savane sénégalaise) et le signal cellulaire fonctionne très bien.
Hier il nous a envoyé un courriel et une minute après avoir appuyé sur “send” je reçois une réponse de mon oncle, qui travaille….en Sibérie! Donc en 30 secondes, mon père a envoyé un courriel à sa fille et sa soeur au Québec ainsi qu’à son beau-frère dans le fin fond de la Russie (Sibérie)!

My father is currently holidaying in Senegal. He brought his BlackBerry (can’t leave home without it!) but didn’t have a clue whether there would be an adequate cellular signal or not. Anyways, he is now in Sine-Saloum (which I gather is in the Senegalese savana) and the cellular signal is perfect.
Yesterday he sent us an email. Less than 30 seconds after pushing “send”, he received an answer from my uncle. My uncle works in…Siberia! So in less than a minute a message was sent from my Dad in Sine-Saloum to his daughter and sister in Quebec AND to his brother-in-law far away in Russia (Siberia).
I’m amazed at how fast communications can be nowadays!

Un sénateur républicain de l’Idaho a été arrêté en juin dernier pour méfait publique dans une toilette pour hommes à l’aéroport de Minneapolis. Larry Craig, reconnu pour ses positions contre les gays dans l’armée et autres positions dites de valeurs familales, aurait plaidé coupable il y a trois semaines. L’affaire a éclaté au grand jour avant-hier grâce à un article dans la revue Roll Call et dans le journal Idaho Statesman.
Le sénateur Craig a fait un bref point de presse hier après-midi. Accompagné de sa femme, il a déclaré qu’il n’est pas gay, qu’il ne l’a jamais été et que tout ça est une chasse aux sorcières faite par les journalistes. De plus il a mentionné qu’il s’est pris un avocat et qu’il veut revenir sur son plaidoyer de culpabilité.
Son mandat sénatorial se termine en 2008. J’ai un pressentiment qu’il ne se représentera pas; l’Idaho est un état solidement républicain (le président Bush l’a gagné en 2004 avec plus de 38 points d’avance sur son adversaire démocrate), les bonzes du GOP de cet état vont sûrement vouloir un candidat moins sulfureux aux prochaines élections…
Ça me fait toujours rire de voir un tel apôtre des supposées valeurs morales se faire prendre la main dans le sac (ou dans le cas ici, le pied dans l’autre cabinet de toilette!)…En plus il en a remis hier avec sa pathétique explication. Si il est innocent, pourquoi a-t’il plaidé coupable? Sans avocat présent? Ça ne passerait pas le test d’urine, comme dirais ma mère!
Le chef de la minorité au Sénat et d’autres influents sénateurs républicains ont eu une télé-conférence hier après-midi. Ils ont finalement décidés d’envoyer le tout devant le comité d’éthique sénatorial.
Soulignons que le sénateur Craig a quitté la campagne présidentielle de Mitt Romney tôt lundi soir./
A republican senator from Idaho was arrested last June in a men’s restroom at the Minneapolis airport for disorderly conduct. Larry Craig, known for his anti-gay positions, pleaded guilty three weeks ago. An article in the magazine Roll Call and in the Idaho Statesman two days ago revealed the story.
Senator Craig, accompanied by his wife, read a brief statement yesterday afternoon. He repeatedly said that he wasn’t gay and blamed the Idaho Statesman for engaging in a witch-hunt. He also mentionned that he hired a lawyer to change his guilty plea and to plead not-guilty instead.
His mandate is over in 2008; I’d be very surprised to see him seek a new one. Idaho is a solid GOP state (President Bush won it in 2004 with more than 38 points over his Democratic challenger), the Idaho Republican Comittee will most likely want a candidate that has less bagage, so to speak…
It always makes me smile to see another supposedly perfect moral values crusader getting caught with his pants down (or, in this case, with his foot in the other stall). He was pathetic yesterday trying to deny the whole thing. If he’s innocent, why did he plead guilty? Without a lawyer present? The whole thing doesn’t pass the piss test, as my Mom likes to say!
The Senate Minority leader had a conference call with other GOP senators yesterday afternoon and it was decided that the matter will be sent to the Senate ethics commitee.
Senator Craig quit the Mitt Romney presidential campaign early monday night.
